world is grey with splashes of green, it's a tundra landscape, it's dotted snow and ice - remember the world didn't freeze into mountainous glaciers, it froze so quickly that it would be as though there was an explosion of cold, frosting everything, no more tropics, near impassable oceans with tumultuous currents
people have their survival switch turned on, people who had been simple civil soldiers in suits and ties have had their breaker reset, thrust into the darkness, under the ice, fumbling for air. most have descended from a near-lawless selfishness to an unloaded loaded gun instinct .. others, simple few, when their breaker reset were simply reborn into the world's new heros, the new soldiers, the new freedom fighters
they come from all walks and they are very few, the corrupted number at least twice as many; as government has collapsed, corporation and 1% rich have come to fill the gap as they -had the resources- both in a material sense and not far from hand, thrusting them essentially into dictatorship.
most in need of regular medication simply perish from lack of supply or lack of viable 'trading' .. which has come back to middle ages, currency is food and drugs and water - clothes - shelter - sex - items of individual value ie: music on disks among other things.
in this case our villan is a corporate princess who has somehow come into a military dictator role, she has a mercanary general who directs an army of self-appointed soldier/miscreants .. heroine is an insulin-dependant woman born during the first 'warming' that melted the earth, the varied results of this being flash floods - hurricanes - drought - ocean current change - mass wildlife death - mass plant death - causing crop disruption, food disruption, water pollution and shortages, housing shortages, increased mortality in all areas, not simply underdeveloped countries - increased occurance of disease, new disease, rare disease - a domino effect resulting in collapse and reorganization of all established norms.
