interlude: revolution waterbirth

she drove her car like some people drive conversations .. in her case the words were succinct, brutal, and timed precisely. her thumbs drummed the steering wheel and she mouthed the lyrics without really listening to the song, frowning at the rainy road ahead. she hadn't given consideration to the idea that the very moment was the metaphor; her absenteeism from the current of vibration peeling away from the engine was her disconnection from desire. the droplets sliding horizontally along the tinted windows were seconds or minutes fleeing past.

she was musing on falling temperatures now that years of desert heat had broken. she was considering how long it would be before the road she travelled on simply flooded like all the rest. she wondered about the child in her womb and the future and its lack of promise without focusing on the present. her husband, the bridgebuilder, was already dead. so self posessed was the mother that she did not see the frantic signalling of drivers leaping out of cars pulled to her right, pointing with ambulance urgency to some point ahead of her attention.

the car burst into the edge of the river and she recoiled, lifting her hands from the steering wheel as the violent current yanked it to one side. brackish water quickly covered the car's hood, gushed over the windshield, and began to fill the footwells. the mother shrieked; she was not ready. noone had been ready.

this was simonetta's introduction to earth; a fatal disconnect and the advent that would save her from a watery death. no baby knows it can so easily return to water once it is thrust free of it; it was so with the revolutionary of the new ice age, too, that where she began she might also end.
